Monday, October 23, 2006 - Productive Day

Rob had a pretty good session today at Project Walk and trust me he REALLY needed to have a good session. It’s been a hard few days...Rob has been feeling a bit like he has reached a plateau in his recovery. For the past three days he hasn’t been able to kick out his left leg which has left him feeling incredibly frustrated, sad, guilty, worried, scared, defeated. Today though his left leg returned and he did some walking with a walker. He needed three trainers to help him (one supporting his upper body, one on the left leg and one on the right leg). His right leg was about 70% independent, his left leg about 30%. He was able to walk for about 5 minutes..making a nice little loop around the gym. He of coarse found the entire process MUCH harder then walking on the treadmill with the walker BUT he felt pretty good about the workout overall. Our friend Jasmine was there to cheer him on so that definately helped. No other news as far as his recovery. We are hoping his left leg continues to wake up but really we need his core/trunk balance to return as he is still having difficulty sitting up by himself. We continue to enjoy the California weather..but we are having difficulty adjusting to the “organic way” (we are still seriously addicted to Mexican and Thai....Rob can get of the narcotics but not the tacossmile Marley is well...she swims in a nearby lagoon everyday and gets nice and sandy. God help the next person to sleep in the guest bed because it is COVERED with sand. I am still trying to get her to walk on a leash properly which is probably my issue-something about pulling on her neck with the leash just doesn’t sit well with me. I am sure you can understand the psychological connection i.e. “fear” of breaking her neck. Probably a good case for the dog whisperer right? The cats are also well...no more infections for Trinity..knock on wood. So that’s the latest!

Thursday, October 19, 2006 - Friday Night Lights

Well we hope everyone has been tuning into Friday Night Lights. The commercials hyped it as sitcom about football but the secondary storyline is about a football player who suffers a spinal cord injury during the season. We’ve been watching and they have done a great job at presenting the injury in a realistic way. It’s on at 8pm Tuesday nights(though you can watch missed episodes at the NBC website: http://www.nbc.com/Friday_Night_Lights/. Tune in-hopefully future episodes will continue to share the experience. The player who was injured headed off to rehab tonight so we hope they don’t cut him out of the show. In other news...both Rob and I have recovered from our various illnesses. My nail infection did turn out to be a staff infection so I"m starting a new 10 day cycle of meds tomorrow. Rob is very proud to report that he has gone off 3 additional medications. He is struggling immensely with some withdrawal symptoms(brain sparks, nausea, dizziness, increased spasms, depression) which have him on an emotional roller coaster. Thankfully working out at Project Walk always lifts his mood. Yesterday, we were interviewed by Project Walk for the creation of a 5-6 minute video that will be featured on their website. We are really excited to be a part of the production and we will be working on the final edits on Thursday. This video is being created in addition to Rob’s intro video and we will definately let you know when both are published on Project Walk’s website. We are getting to know some of the other patients who participate in the Project Walk program. We’ve listed their websites below in case you were interested in learning more about their personal experiences:
